Bancha 番茶 (Ban = rough, rustic) is the second most widely drunk Japanese green tea. It is grown and processed in the same way as sencha, the difference is the later harvest.
Until recently we did not import Bancha at all, the quality did not justify the 6000km long journey. This is now changing thanks to Tamiko Kinezuka - the bancha she produces is not only very pleasant to drink, but also easy to prepare and will provide 2-3 delicious infusions. The leaves from the autumn harvest are firmer, contain more catechins and less caffeine due to more exposure to the sun. This makes Bancha popular for evening drinking and for people sensitive to caffeine.
