The Tsuyuhikari cultivar was created in 1970 by crossing Asatsayu and Shizu-7132. By 2001, it was so well recognized that it was officially recommended to farmers in Shizuoka, despite the fact that its registration did not occur until March 2001. It is usually harvested 2 days earlier than the classic Yabukita.
The name was chosen with the vision that Tsuyuhikari would bring a bright future to the tea industry in Shizuoka.
