Flavor Profile
This exclusive tea from the high-altitude Kangaita garden captivates with its full-bodied, sweet flavor and subtle spicy notes. Thanks to its unique terroir and careful selection of the youngest tips and leaves, it develops depth, richness, and a long-lasting aftertaste, making it a gem among Kenyan teas.

Kangaita Tea Factory

Founded in 1965 to support small-scale tea farmers on the foothills of the majestic Mt. Kenya, Kangaita Tea Factory has always prioritized the production of premium teas cherished by connoisseurs worldwide.

  • 5,700 smallholder farmers cultivate tea in the region, managing over 960 hectares of tea plantations.

  • The tea gardens lie at an altitude of over 2,000 meters, where the cooler climate slows leaf growth, allowing a richer, more intense flavor profile to develop.

  • Double rainy seasons (March–April and October–December) keep the tea bushes in excellent condition for most of the year.

  • Since 1977, the factory has been managed by the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), which supports small-scale growers and ensures their crops meet the highest global standards.

In addition to black teas, Kangaita experiments with white teas, purple teas, and specialties like oolong.

The History of Tea in Kenya

Tea cultivation in Kenya dates back to the early 20th century under British colonial rule. The first tea seeds were brought by British settler C.S. Caine in 1903 and experimentally planted in Limuru. Initially, Kenya was seen as more suitable for coffee, so the tea industry grew slowly. In 1924, the Kenya Tea Company established larger plantations in Kericho, where high altitude, fertile volcanic soil, and abundant rainfall proved ideal. By the 1930s, tea became a significant export crop, though controlled by British colonial entities.

After independence in 1963, the sector transformed. The government established the Kenya Tea Development Authority (KTDA) in 1964, empowering smallholders with knowledge, seedlings, and market access. By the 1980s, small farms surpassed large plantations in output. Today, over 600,000 smallholders form the backbone of Kenya’s tea industry, contributing over 60% of production.

Kenya is now the world’s third-largest tea exporter (after China and India), renowned for CTC (crush-tear-curl) black tea exported to Pakistan, Egypt, and the UK. The Mombasa Auction System, established in 1956, is a global trading hub. Tea contributes 4% of Kenya’s GDP and employs over 3 million people, underscoring its immense economic importance.
