Tokoname
Tokoname is the first of Japan's six historic pottery towns, known as the "Six Ancient Japanese Kilns". (The others are Bizen, Shigaraki, Tamba, Seto and Echizen)
Tokoname was known as a pottery town as early as the late 12th century, and due to its proximity to the sea, pottery from Tokoname reached all over Japan.
Tokoname tea ware has a long history and tradition that dates back 900 years ago. However, typical red clay pottery appears in the early 19th century.
Nowadays, Tokoname pottery is among the absolute top of the range and even the cheapest pieces achieve considerable quality.
